What is isocyanuric acid?
Cyanuric acid is a chemical compound used as a chlorine stabilizer in outdoor pools. Chlorine has great sanitizing power but in outdoor conditions, the sun's UV rays affect the effectiveness of chlorine. Isocyanuric acid stabilizes the chlorine by reducing losses caused by ultraviolet light from the sun.
The main function of the stabilizer is to ensure that the chlorine stays longer and that more effective disinfection of the pool water occurs.
Isocyanuric acid is a component that carries chlorine and reduces the degradation of free chlorine by UV radiation from the sun but it also has a negative factor and that is that as the concentration of CyA increases, the disinfection power of free chlorine decreases.
Isocyanuric acid is a component that does not degrade, so as we add disinfectant, the percentage of this element increases and the percentage of free chlorine decreases.
What is the optimum level of isocyanuric acid?
In Spain, RD 742/2013 establishes the basic technical-sanitary criteria for water quality. In the case of isocyanuric acid it has to be lower than 75 ppm. In case of exceedance of 150 mg/L the vessel will be closed until the normalization of the value.
The optimum levels are between 30-50 ppm so that the chlorine will remain longer. Below 20 ppm it will have a negligible stabilizing effect and above 75 ppm it will limit the disinfection efficiency of the chlorine.
How can we regulate it?
If the level of isocyanuric acid exceeds 100-150 ppm it will be necessary to renew the pool water, as it can be harmful to health.
If the value is between 75-100 ppm, we can try to recover the values by washing the filter, renewing the water and adding chlorine without stabilizer such as Ritocal.
